Karcham Wangtoo is a large-scale hydroelectric power plant located in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, India, along the Sutlej River. With a capacity of 1,000 MW, it ranks among the major hydropower facilities in the country, supporting India's growing demand for clean energy. The plant operates as a run-of-the-river scheme, utilizing the Sutlej's flow without significant water storage. It features a 6.5 km long headrace tunnel and four Francis turbines. The project was developed by Jaypee Group and began commercial operations in 2011. It plays a key role in the northern grid, supplying power to states like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Delhi. Environmentally, the plant displaces fossil fuel generation, reducing CO2 emissions by an estimated 4 million tonnes annually. However, its construction involved tunneling through ecologically sensitive Himalayan terrain, requiring mitigation measures for local biodiversity and riverine ecosystems.
