Laguna Verde is a nuclear power plant located in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, near the Gulf of Mexico. Operated by the state-owned Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE), it is the only nuclear power plant in Mexico and plays a critical role in the country's energy mix. With a capacity of 1510 MW, it is a large-scale facility that contributes significantly to Mexico's baseload electricity generation. The plant consists of two boiling water reactor units, which began commercial operation in 1990 and 1995. It operates under the regulatory oversight of Mexico's National Commission for Nuclear Safety and Safeguards (CNSNS). The facility uses low-enriched uranium fuel and employs safety systems typical of Generation II reactors. Its location on the coast provides access to cooling water from the Gulf of Mexico. As Mexico's sole nuclear facility, Laguna Verde helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel plants. Laguna Verde's nuclear fuel cycle avoids direct CO2, SOx, and NOx emissions during operation, contributing to Mexico's climate goals.
