Ajman Sewage Treatment Plant: Secondary Treatment with Reuse in Ajman, UAE

The Ajman Sewage Treatment Plant is a major wastewater facility located in the Al Jurf Industrial Area on the outskirts of Ajman city, in the Ajman Emirate of the United Arab Emirates. Serving a population of approximately 700,000, it is one of the largest treatment plants in the region, reflecting the rapid urbanization and development of the emirate. The plant employs activated sludge treatment with biological nutrient removal, achieving secondary treatment standards. With a designed capacity of 140,000 cubic meters per day and a current discharge volume of 130,000 cubic meters per day, it operates at a high utilization rate of 92.86%. The facility is owned by Ajman Sewerage (Private) Company Limited and operated by Moalajah, a joint venture between Veolia and BESIX, under the regulatory oversight of the Government of Ajman. All treated wastewater is reused for landscape and agricultural irrigation, supporting the emirate's water conservation and sustainability goals. This reuse strategy reduces demand on freshwater resources and contributes to the greening of urban areas, while preventing any direct discharge into natural water bodies or the nearby Arabian Gulf.

The plant is located within 10 km of the Arabian Gulf coast, but its treated effluent is fully reused for irrigation, eliminating direct marine discharge. This practice supports the local watershed by reducing freshwater extraction for landscaping and agriculture, and helps protect the Gulf's coastal ecosystems from nutrient pollution. The region's arid climate makes water reuse critical for sustaining green spaces and food production.
